Names and faces, times and places -- these all change. Human nature does not. Every so often, actually very often lately, I hear people ragging on the Leather community and those within who do not met the plaintiff individuals' expectations. Sometimes we place standards higher than they need be, or place certain people and/or groups on a pedestal so high that they are doomed to fail the expectations that accompany such lofty positions. I know that I did this in the early days of The Leather Journal and got burned by the same when I hit a tough snag in the mid 1990s. The Leather community has had credos of safe, sane, consensual and, trust, honor and respect parroted by so many, but do/can we really live up to what some people expect in these, especially the latter. (let us know your opinion. Do you think the writer is right on or is he Clueless In Seattle. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to make your opinion known.)Â There are many communities out there that claim to be better than others, in part because of the standards they set, credos or teachings from entire books that they follow. Because we have a credo of trust, honor and respect many leave it at that and do not really follow it. I've heard some use it in interviews and speeches at Leather contests that I've judged, but have seen some of these falter when the least bit of pressure caused them to crack only hours later during the same weekend. It is common to point to Christians who taut the name of Jesus at every turn, but who also seem to violate every standard that Jesus taught. The same goes for many other religions, groups, clubs or organizations who have lofty teachings pushed on greater society by zealots who see these teachings as the ultimate and only way to live, but who also ignore said codes of conduct when any level of pressure is upon them. Simply, they are labeled hypocrites. I think we all need to examine what each of the words trust, honor, respect mean individually and collectively. Rather than being able to parrot them off when ever queried, start to live them. Trust: Is the person or group to be trusted worthy of such trust? Is the person who is expected to do the trusting able to trust? Why should something or someone be trusted over something or someone else? Just because a group of supposed leaders say so? Just because the one or thing to be trusted makes one's dick hard or another part aroused due to different gender? Honor: much of the above applies. Should we honor someone who frequently lies about sex? I mean, there are those who will lie about sex as if that is all right, but God forbid anyone should lie about anything else. Because it is sex, such lies seem to trump any credo. If your are my size you've been lied to so many times by so many people, who only minutes later will parrot "trust, honor and respect." Not so fast. When I get that their credibility has been short circuited. I've seen others get this treatment too. Respect: The same as both above. Just because some one is wearing cover/Leather motorcycle cap and has keys and hankies hanging on their left side does not mean that they are worthy of respect. The same goes for those who insist on being called Mr. Y----, Mistress J------ or Grand Master L-------. Those who heard Laura Antoniou's speech a couple of years ago at South Plains Leather Fest know what I'm talking about. I don't remember the exact words, but she basically said what I just wrote. I wrote apiece several months ago titled The Guard. I suggested that we stop using Old Guard to define old Leather. Ken Arnwolt saw the piece and suggested the use of Traditional Leather instead of The Guard. Those in Traditional Leather are well aware of the problems caused by those going out claiming to be Mr. Q---- and getting upset when they are not addressed as such. The same people in Traditional Leather use Mr. Mistress and Master, but only bestow such titles on people well after they have earned such titles. Thing here is that these titles are only really valid inside the society where they were bestowed in the first place. Those in Traditional Leather seldom if ever get upset when someone outside Traditional Leather does not address Mistress B----- as such because they know that it is part of their society and that is the limit. However, there are those outside Traditional Leather using these and other titles for gain beyond scene play and societal standing. And Traditional Leather often gets blamed by those not understanding the difference between Traditional Leather and those basically mimicking it without being a part of it. Most people out there do not know or understand the difference and often Traditional Leather unjustly foots the bill. Respect is earned. Anyone who demands respect is already walking on thin ice and should look within as to why some are not addressing them with their dream title. This touches on honor. Should we honor someone with a title just because they claim to be such. We are all subject to the foibles of human nature. Just because we have a credo or two does not make us better than anyone else. In the grand scheme of things we are no better or worse than anyone else. In times when we do appear to be better it is because someone has actually done something extra special or gone the extra mile. When we look like jerks it is usually because someone took a short cut and/or thought themselves to be above the community standard. There is not group out there better than any other because all groups are made up of humans. Names and faces, times and places -- these all change. Human natures does not.
