The Leather Journal resumes printing

The Leather Journal, which first published in May 1987, is back in print with Issue #317, July - August 21. The newspaper had been on hiatus since March 2020 and its return was questionable as it was/is for many businesses due to the pandemic. - Continues

The current Issue is only 16 pages with its Leather Community Calendar trimmed to one 16" column from four. Issue #317 is a compilation of approximately 150 short snippets with 27 obituaries, business closings and event cancellations due to the corona virus pandemic.

Garry Bowie, long time member of the Satyrs Motorcycle Club, graces the front cover+. He passed on due to Covid-19 in the early days of the pandemic. The Leather Journal wanted to honor Bowie for all of his service to the community.

While The Leather Journal was on hold, we invested our time and effort on TheLeatherJournal.com Our viewership has increased several times over in 16 months. For many, the print and online versions of The Leather Journal are the only available sources of Leather/BDSM/Fetish/Club community information.

While we have been knocked on our butt financially during the break, we founded a GoFundMe page at the suggestion of several Leather community leaders. If you wish to support the revival of The Leather Journal please go to

Mates Leather Weekend is a Go

Very happy to say that plans are finally underway for Mates Leather Weekend XXIV, September 30 – October 4. As you can imagine, things will be a little different this year so check for updates periodically. Provincetown venues are currently requiring a vaccination card for entry into their establishments. I expect that policy to remain in effect throughout the fall including during MLW. Please be prepared.

A portion of all proceeds from Mates Leather Weekend XXIV benefits AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod.

We have very few details as this came in hours before we posted this Hump Day.

The Life and Times of the Legendary Larry Townsend
(Saluting the 50th Anniversary of The Leatherman’s Handbook)
by Jack Fritscher, PhD
222 pages, 82 Illustrations, Paperback/Kindle and Free Online

This lively new memoir celebrates Larry Townsend’s 90th birthday and the 50th Anniversary of his Leatherman’s Handbook — a 1972 founding text for Leatherfolk still read in the 21st Century. The Leather Journal fans may enjoy Drummer editor Jack Fritscher's salute to his dear friend of 40 years. This page-turner about the Hollywood rise and fall of Townsend is also an origin-story of Leather culture. Larry was the Drummer and Honcho writer who helped create what TLJ long ago dubbed the “Leather Boom” that began around the world’s likely first Leather bar, Cinema, where he came out in 1953 Los Angeles.

Townsend wrote 80 best-selling novels. He helped found Leather publishing and activism. The memoir quotes Larry’s own words alongside real-time testimony of intimate friends, especially his “Leather Wife” Jeanne Barney. Townsend’s friend, pre-viewer Peter Fiske, noted that “What Townsend wrote in 1972 about his own Leatherman’s Handbook applies to Fritscher’s 2021 handbook about Townsend: ‘...it’s a definitive exploration of the gay S&M Leather scene...written by a qualified writer who has observed it all from the inside.'"
Fighting for Leather rights, Townsend disrupted politically-correct censors condemning as “filth” the consensual S&M he championed as an empowering healing ritual for Leathermen coping with PTSD caused by homophobia. Fritscher, who invited Townsend to write for Drummer in 1978, stayed true to his friend’s shocking end. As a Leather historian, he gives expert eyewitness in this fascinating memoir of Leather lives well lived from the 1950s to 2008. Because Fritscher posts all of his books free to all as a Leather-community service, you can read “Townsend” free at

Joining BLUF is free and open to men who meet our dress code requirements. The site is run by volunteers, and owned by BLUF Ltd, a not-for-profit company based in the UK. Photo above is BLUF at Berlin Pride on Saturday, July 24. BLUF makes itself visible at events all over the world.

Since May, 1987, The Leather Journal has been bringing news to the Leather community in print. The first Issue was a quarterly, and within a couple years advanced to bimonthly and then to a monthly newspaper. The Leather Journal has been honored and blessed in so many ways and has accomplished iron-man records in LGBTQ publishing. When it hasn’t always been easy, we have withstood every challenge.

TheLeatherJournal.com began in 1996 and has expanded and stayed alive during the pandemic.

For many, the print and online versions of The Leather Journal are the only available sources of community information.

The Leather Journal is celebrating 34 years and is now the longest continuously-running Leather publication in history.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the print version has been down since last spring. In that time, without incoming revenue, we have accrued a large sum of debt. We are resuming publication in July and need to rebuild our advertising base since a good number of our advertisers did not make it out of the pandemic. We are reaching out for support so we can return to reporting news to the Leather community.

I am asking you to give from your heart. Remember the first time you saw your photo and/or name in The Leather Journal or on http://www.TheLeatherJournal.com and how proud you felt? Most likely, you were thrilled and shared it with friends. Perhaps you won a title or became a club officer and others learned of your accomplishments reading The Leather Journal. Perhaps you discovered the Leather community through reading the pages of The Leather Journal.

Please help ensure the newer folk in the Leather community can share this experience. To help The Leather Journal to resume publication and keep going, I ask you to first give, then implore your friends to help by posting and sharing this urgent request.

A sincere thank you to all. We have been blessed with the support we have received over the years and are thankful to those who can assist now.

Dave Rhodes
Publisher and Editor,
The Leather Journal

Fox Hole: Drenched postponed

Due to the rise of COVID-19, Green Mirror Entertainment and Michael Lara have decided to postpone our Fox Hole: Drenched event until things are safe again for everyone. Fox Hole was scheduled for August 14 at the Bullet Bar in North Hollywood, CA.

Gabriel Green said, "We care about the well-being and safety of our community. We don’t want anyone to potentially run the risk of catching the virus, which has already affected the lives of many, even recently. So, in the meantime, please stay safe, protect yourselves and your loved ones, and we look forward to seeing you when you can safely.

Flash Back Gallery

We dig into our treasure chest of 75,000 photos and find 75 more photos of Leather/BDSM/Fetishfolk participating in LGBTQ Pride events around North America from 2000 through 2009.

Because there were so many to choose from, it was not easy to decide who to include. Many decisions were made on quality of the photographs we have. There are a lot of faces of our people who have passed, who are leading the way now and those starting to leave their mark.
