Arctic Pilot Leather Weekend

Article by Ariq Wilson and Gallery photos by Will Stone, Douglas OKeeffe, Holger Langer, John O'Brien and Helge Nylund

Coming down an indoor water slide, viewing a city hall presentation and going to a fetish party after attending church - This all happened November 10-13 in Tromsø Norway, the third largest city in the world north of the Arctic Circle, home to the northernmost Pride and Leather weekend in the world.

Per Mister Leather Norway 2019 Helge Nylund and member of the SLM Oslo (Scandinavian Leathermen Oslo) Club founded the Arctic Pilot Leather weekend as a way to showcase Leather and fetish to a community during the week of Arctic Pride.

Upon arrival I saw a beautiful modern city, filled with neat little shops, cafes and restaurants and even a number of-24-hour convenience stores. The “Sentrum” (city center) is quite walkable for most with no shortage of beautiful mountain and ocean views. The people are welcoming, warm and trusting, truly a breath of fresh air.

The schedule was full of a mix of activities that will expose one to the uniqueness of the region while still offering what we have come to know in Leather weekends. Thursday after the meet and greet and visit to a local tavern we boarded a bus to Tromsøbadet, an indoor water park along with a walk through the forest around the lake to attempt to view the northern lights.

Friday, we attended a town hall where the city program of addressing LGBT education was presented, Q&A followed - this city has a plan! Later that afternoon we were shuttled to the local dog sledding facility to meet and cuddle husky dogs, who howled in response to the call of arrroooo! Friday evening, we attended Rainbow Mass at the Tromso Cathedral. The service, mostly in Norwegian, was thoughtful with a message of acceptance and love. The Fetish Dance Party was that night at a local venue with two floors with amazing tunes by DJ K-Paxian (aka) Mister Leather Norway 2021.

The highlight of the weekend was the Arctic Pride parade. The Leather contingent, led by Per Helge and current Mister Leather Norway 2022 Georg Luschsy, neatly following in two rows carrying flags. I carried the flag of California along with dozens of “Pilots” representing 15 countries. The parade itself huge for a city of its size, the streets lined with people as the parade route went through the center of the city.

There were many more activities that are too many to list including a formal dinner and the Arctic Pride closing party which included performances, dancing and where Leather met the mainstream gay community. We could tell we made an impression on the locals.

Helge shared with us that years ago, as he was coming of age, he didn’t see many Leather men walking the streets of his town. He invited us here to give us an experience and show us off to his town.

He was particularly touched by those who came from small towns and villages throughout the north of Norway by bus during Arctic Pilot Leather Weekend - some experiencing Leather for the first time; including a young man who had never been out before but appeared at the fetish dance party. Because he was treated so well, he felt comfortable to march with us in the parade. That is exactly what Leather is all about. See gallery with 11 photos by scrolling all the way down.

CineKink 20th Anniversary Season

CineKink - the kinky film festival - is seeking works that celebrate and explore a wide diversity of sexuality for its 20th Anniversary season.

Founded in 2003 with the intent of recognizing and encouraging sex-positive and kink-friendly depictions, CineKink will consider offerings from both the independent film world and the adult, with selections ranging from documentary to drama, camp comedy to artsy experimental, mildly spicy to quite explicit--and everything in between.

"Basically, as long as it involves consenting adults, just about anything celebrating sex as a right of self-expression is fair game," says Lisa Vandever, CineKink co-founder and director. "Far be it from us to define 'kink.' If you think your work might make sense in this context, please send it along!"

Scheduled for its 20th anniversary appearance in May/June 2023, the specially curated CineKink NYC will include a short film competition, audience choice awards and an adult entertainment showcase/contest, with a national screening tour to follow. After several seasons of online festivals, organizers plan to offer in-person festivities and screenings, as long as it’s possible to do so safely and affordably, while utilizing virtual presentations to expand their offerings and reach a wider audience.

The "regular deadline is January 10th and the late deadline is February 3rd, with submission fees increasing at each tier.

As always, entry fees are waived for CineKink-alumni filmmakers, provided they are submitted by the regular deadline of January 6, with a limit of three entries each. Waiver information has been emailed to all alumni.

For more information and submission guidelines, please visit http://cinekink.com/programs-and-events/call-for-entries

The next chapter of Sanctuary starts January 10, 2023

By Mistress Cyan

Yes, I am so happy to say that the next chapter in the Sanctuary Legacy starts on January 10, 2023! That is the official closing date of escrow and the date that we can then take possession of the building. We are really excited to be only four weeks away from getting started again and to all of you who have reached out and volunteered to help, thank you!

We have set up a short form for everyone who would like to help so we can efficiently schedule volunteers and know what each person’s interest and expertise is. We can use help from those who have a specific skill or specialty, such as construction, plumbing, and electrical, as well as those who want to donate time to help unload the pods, paint, do upholstery, etc. If you would lie to help us, please click on the following link and let us know. We are hoping to get everything built out and be ready to re-open to the public early February.

Here is the link to volunteer https://forms.office.com/r/9Ax4b7dSF1

For those of you who would like to help out financially, we have set up a fundraising campaign. Since we moved out of the LAX site on August 1st, we have been paying rent on nine pods and storage, as well as insurance, phone, etc, and expect to incur a heavy cost getting the building ready to open for events. For those who are interest in making a donation, here is the link https://www.paypal.com/donate?campaign_id=34J23HHMJGBF4

Leather Archives matching fund's goal met

The Leather Archives & Museum set a goal to raise $20,000 by the end of 2022, with a challenge match from The John Palatinus Trust, Full Kit Gear and an anonymous donor. True to form, the community came through....and then some, to the tune of $22,000. As of December 7, LA&M has passed that challenge goal, and the $20,000 magically became $40,000. Many thanks to everyone who helped to support this campaign, with both donations and positive energy.

Although the campaign is over, there is still time to make an end-of-year donation to receive the tax benefits for 2022. Also, all donations received before December 31st are still eligible for the LA&M great "thank you" gifts, including a chance to win a kangaroo bullwhip donated by Bob Huffman for all donations over $500. The LA&M is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.

COMMAND MC - 2022 shows growth of club

By Rob Cwiklowski

Tonight, December 5, was my last meeting as President of COMMAND MC. It was great to lead the club over the past several years. I'm not leaving, just changing roles and focused on being the Road Captain this coming year.

It was a great meeting as we had Steve Shavitz, one of the first people to Pledge the club when it first began, speak on sobriety and share a couple great stories of the original club. We were honor ed to hear from our new Maryland Leather title holder, Finn Michael Coy-Gresavage, with just a taste of what this coming year will look like for them. Then we had three new pledges, and an associate member begin their journey with the club and another former member reactivate his membership! COMMAND MC is alive and well.

Desert Fetish Authority - Leather/Fetish Open Discussion

Join the Desert Fetish Authority for their monthly Leather/Fetish Open Discussion Group, Kink Talk! The purpose and topic is to talk openly about kink in fetish and how it enhances and affects our lives. They gather every second Saturday from 3-4:30 PM at the Barracks in Cathedral City. Stefen Burchard facilitates.

Most sessions have minimal structure, but they sometimes announce a topic in advance as a jumping off point. Stefen will allow the energy of the group - as revealed during the introductions and intent portion - to dictate where the discussion will lead.

The purpose of the group is to provide a forum for Leatherfolk to come together and speak uncensored about their experiences, desires and possible challenges in the Leather and Fetish community. Stefen’s intent is to facilitate an open, non-judgmental space in which Leatherfolk can all grow and learn from each other and become closer as DFA Brothers. With a few discussions under their belt, the group will take on a life, culture and direction of its own.

Is Your Kink Actually a Fetish? Let’s Break It Down

By Suzannah Weiss, photo by James Lightbown

People often use the terms “kink” and “fetish” interchangeably—but there's a key difference.

What ultimately matters is not what label you put on a sexual desire but how comfortable you are with it. "Healthy intimacy happens with consenting adults and is safe for everyone involved,” says Lichtenstein. “Regardless of your kink or fetish, when your sexual behavior isn’t damaging to yourself or others, the healthiest way to deal with it is to accept what you are feeling and desiring as a natural part of who you are."

While all fetishes are kinks, not all kinks are not fetishes, explains Justin Lehmiller, Ph.D., a researcher at the Kinsey Institute, member of the Men's Health advisory panel, and resident sex researcher at Astroglide

IDL 1994 Jose Granda killed in fiery car crash

Supplied by Karen Taylor from NBC 6 South Florida by Heather Walker

The victim of a fiery weekend crash in Miami has been identified by loved ones as a leader in the deaf and gay community.

Jose Granda spent more than 30 years teaching American Sign Language at Miami-Dade College and was a frequent presenter at sign language interpreter conferences at the local, state and national level, the college said in a statement Wednesday.

"Prof. Granda also held positions in many nonprofit organizations, assisting clients with program coordination for ASL, as well as coordinating special services with government and community agencies in this regard. He was beloved by students, and peers lauded him for his ‘expressive demeanor, which displayed the full impact of American Sign Language’ and for serving as a mentor to many sign language interpreters in the field," the statement read. "His lasting impact on his students and the MDC community will be felt for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."

Granda was 69 years old, according to online posts from loved ones.

The two-vehicle crash happened just after midnight Sunday in the 1700 block of Southwest 22nd Avenue and involved a tow truck.

Granda’s car crashed into a power pole and caught fire according to witness. He was pronounced dead on scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Since news of his death broke, there has been an outpouring of support from across the country.

Messages of condolences have come from the National Hispanic Latino Association of the Deaf to the Deaf Queer Resource Center in California. And posts said he will be remembered as a proud deaf, gay, Cuban.

A celebration of Granda's life is being planned for noon on Jan. 14th at the Broward Association of the Deaf.
