Leather History Preservation Weekend

By Tori Jones

Leather History Preservation Weekend was a three-day event held at the Sonesta Atlanta Airport North the weekend of November 2-4 in Atlanta, GA, dedicated to sharing the diverse voices and experiences of Leather, and the tradition of sharing our oral histories with one another. We make items of historical value - books, photographs, recordings - available for conference participants to make these personal histories more immediate and real. Historians presented two 90 minute sessions each on their own histories, there was a formal dinner with a keynote speech by Paul Berry with Dave Hudson as emcee. The historians were Dave Rhodes, Master Varii, Master Wes, Jack Handcock, Marty and Petal.

The Leather Quilt originated over 10 years ago and included approximately 100 one-foot squares. it was on display at LHPW where a few more panels were added, bringing the count to about 215, more than anyone might have hoped for in the early years.

LHPW is not like any other Leather event. LHPW is not about teaching people how to do SM, run groups, or further their relationship dynamic. This weekend brings Leatherfolk of all identities, and orientations together to share their experiences – their trials, triumphs, and tragedies, feelings, and opinions, to tell their personal stories. Learn where today’s Leather came from, to make wiser decision about where we will take Leather tomorrow.

LHPW is for anyone curious about, or new to Leather, seasoned Leatherfolk, and others who wish to learn more about living a Leather lifestyle.

The Leather History Preservation Foundation received the Pantheon of Leather Small Event of the Year Award in 2018.

Mr. International Rubber 2023

Nine individuals competed for the Mr. International Rubber 2023 title, representing six countries, and when the scores were totaled, the top three placements went to Mr. International Rubber 27 AJ Huff from San Francisco, first runner-up Rolo from Dublin, Ireland, and second runner-up Dante Woods of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The remaining contestants were Pony from California, Sergio Alexander from Australia, Jester DeKay from Florida, Jakob Rex from Denmark, Bearbie from France, and Rubbabeard from New York.

The majority of the weekend events were held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Skokie, IL, and the contest was held at the beautiful North Shore Center for the Performing Arts.

At the conclusion of the 27th Mr. International Rubber contest, the Board of Directors for MIR Contest, NPO announced that beginning with their 2024 event, the contest would become gender inclusive. Additionally, they announced the weekend would no longer be known as Mr. International Rubber, and would simply be known as “MIR” moving forward.

Rubber Club leaders in attendance at MIR27 met on the final day to discuss issues of mutual concern, and exchanged ideas and experiences with each other as part of the annual Rubber Club Summit. It was a productive discussion and club leaders were energized by the weekend and by meeting each other. At the conclusion of the summit, it was agreed that a Telegram Chat should be established to help facilitate ongoing communication between global rubber club leaders throughout the year.
That chat has now been established and already has close to 30 participants who have joined.

LA Leather Getaway by CLAW

The third iteration of LA Leather Getaway by CLAW held at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles Thanksgiving weekend, November 22-26, showed a 10 percent growth from 2022. Several tweaks made it easier for attendees to navigate the Bonaventure. Major events were joined in the huge Pasadena Room on a lower level.

As does its older sibling, CLAW, LA Leather Getaway boasts it is "Zero percent contest and 100 percent fun." In keeping this there were several events going on at the same time at almost all hours of the event which also featured the 15th Leather Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony story written by Rostom Mesli: The 15th Leather Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on Sunday, November 26 at the Leather Getaway by CLAW at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, California. The LHOF Induction was part of the greater CLAW LA weekend where there were vendors, classes, dance parties, play parties and socials. A private cocktail reception was held for the award recipients on Friday night in one of the executive suites.

The recipients were Robert Meijer who founded RoB Amsterdam, a popular brand of Leather and kinky gear; John Sutcliffe who was among the most influential fashion designers, entrepreneurs, and kink technological innovators of the 20th century; and the 69 Club which was founded in London in 1965 by Tony Hepworth and by Felix Jones. Parties for a Cause

By Jim Neuman

Just to let you know the results of our two Pride Parties…we raised a lot of money and we thank you. The combined total attendance of 385 folks (235 and 150), between the two parties, and the fact that ALL the expenses at both parties were hosted, we were able to present checks to Guide Dogs of the Desert for $10,492, Tom Of Finland Foundation for $3,250 and the REAF Emergency Fund for $3,125.

Please accept my sincere thank you for all who participated…. your generosity was overwhelming. I’ve heard from many attendees that the food, entertainment and socialization was wonderful. Each guest donated $50 at the time of registration. At the first party our longtime friends, Sharon McNight and Steve Knill provided the entertainment with Lenny Broberg holding court for the live auction and International Mr. Leather 2023 Marcus Barela, lending his support to the action. The Leather Journal erred in its post on funds raised per capita at $500 and regrets the error - it was $50 per person as noted above.

I know that my late Partner, Dick, would have loved the outpouring of so much caring. Hugs and thanks, Jim.

The Roast of Graylin Thornton

By Daddy Ray Tilton

If you remember they started back in 2012 with Lenny Broberg 20 years IML, 2013 with Queen Cougar 20 years MsSFL, we took exception and roasted IML 2013 Andy Cross in 2014, followed by Donna Sachet's 20 years Empress in 2015 and our last Gary Virginia's 20 years as Mr SFL in 2016.

After an almost seven year hiatus it was time to roast (maybe even spit roast) Graylin Thornton for his many, many years of advocacy within the broader LGBT community and specifically within the BIPOC and kink scenes with unwavering dedication.

On December 16 at the SF Eagle, friends celebrated 30 years of Graylin's commitment, service and success since his historic win as International Mr. Drummer 1993. Co/MC's Race Bannon and Sister Roma guided the show on the road and through the gutters. Titleholders, club dignitaries, Sisters and more chipped in on landmark occasions and humorous moments.

By Nicole Schmidt for Glamour Magazine supplied by the NCSF

Dominant Partners Six Red Flags to Watch Out for - Exploring your submissive side can be hot. Maybe you’re into the suit-wearing Christian Grey type (Leather crop included), or perhaps being called a “good girl” is what turns you on. But Carolanne Marcantonio, a kink- and poly-affirmative certified sex therapist and the co-creator of the NYC-based Wise Sex Therapy Associates, points out that as a submissive, or “s-type,” it’s easy to mistake....

A Blast from The Past

Great Lakes Olympus Leather and Power Exchange 2014

On November 8-9, 2013, the Great Lakes Mr. Olympus Leather 2014 title went to Sir Bear Abbott and the Great Lakes Power Exchange Couple 2014 titles went to Sir Harold and Linda.

As the crowd filled the Indy 501 Eagle, for the meet and greet on Friday night, one could feel the energy for the coming contest building.

On Saturday, afternoon, were the Interviews. The judges, Praxis, Lady Elsa, Jules, slave aaron, tracy, Walt, and everyone’s favorite little bug, cricket were ready to judge the one’s standing before them! The competitors were Mr Bear, Sir Harold and Linda, and on Saturday evening at the 501 Eagle which was packed to capacity. The hysterical antics of the emcees, boi kris and Robyn, kept the contest on moving. Baskets were held for auction to provide the winners their own Travel Fund.

After the speeches and the fantasies played out, it was time for the judges to decide if the competitors had reached their 70 percent minimum to move on. It was Ms Kendra and boy john’s pleasure to announce that all competitors achieved more than 80 percent.

Great Lakes Olympus Leather and Power Exchange were produced by Ms Kendra and boy john.
