MAL 2026: Staying Positive in a Sea of Change
By Rodney Burger

Mr. Pittsburgh Leather Fetish 2026 Gage Ryder was sashed Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2026 during the annual Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend hosted by the Centaur MC at the Hyatt Regency Washington Capitol Hill on January 16th -19th. First runner-up went to Dante from Raleigh, North Carolina and Mr. Connecticut Leather 2026 Ricky Mestre took home the second runner-up medallion. Also

competing in front of a packed ballroom were Mr. Virginia Leather 2025 Sir Don, Mr. Rehoboth Leather 2025 Adam Gold, Morbius Nkosi (ONYX SE) from Atlanta, and Mr. North Carolina Triangle Leather 2025 Boy Diesel (Sean).

Judging what had to be a very close contest were Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2025 Jason Elliott, International Mr. Leather 2025 Rene Hebert, popular Baltimore entertainer Miss Leon’s 2025 Sapphire Brilliance Dupree, President of Steel City Pups Asami the Fox, Mr. Eagle LA Leather 2025 Matias Gomez Constenla, Mr. San Francisco Leather 2019 Jawn Marques, and Leatherman performer and founder of a performing arts studio Omar Ziese.

Tally Masters were Mr. GNI Leather 2022 Christopher Gonzalez and Mr. Rubber Ireland 2015 Collie (Pup Link). Tasked with keeping the judges happy was Judges’ Boy Mr. Mayhem Leather 2023 Keron. The contest was co-emceed by Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 1993 Frank Nowicki and Mr. Mid-Atlantic Leather 2020 David Spivey. After being the amazing MAL emcee since 1995, Frank is passing the torch. It is always nice to see new faces, some on the old faces.

The theme for the weekend was Centaur Noir which fit very well with a hotel that had recently been completely redecorated in a sort of steampunk style in shades of black and white. As with all changes, it was not without controversy. The hotel issued at statement that: “Due to recently completed renovations, large gatherings will not be allowed in suites and guest rooms.” The Leather community is all about adapting to change, so the fun did not end. Most clubs just scaled down their gatherings, limiting them to club members and a few guests. If 2020 taught us anything, it is about adapting and making it work. Mr. MAL 2009 Kip Hollar had a much smaller party this year, but I still had a wonderful time and met some interesting people.

Things change. I can remember when someone could just walk into the lobby at MAL for free. Now, not only are tickets required, there were warnings about scammers selling bogus tickets.

One thing that didn’t change was Saturday night’s Leather Cocktails. This year the Centaur MC toasted fifty years of th Leather community’s best party. Not only were there amazing film noir decorations, (Where does one find black roses and black calla lilies?), but a film was even made that played in the lobby and above the escalators leading to the ballroom.

Also unchanged were the popular MIR Rubber Social, Puppy Mosh, Super Hero Meet-Up, MAUL Cocktail Party, and the always-packed ONYX Fashion Show.

The very look of Leather has changed over the years. I remember a time when there were two types of Leather: black and wrong. Boy have times changed! I saw even more colors this year and so many new designs. The large Leather vendor mart had a wonderful mix of old favorites like Anubis Gear, WolfStryker, and Mr. S and fun new offerings from Vilain Garcon and Sir Rat Leather & Gear.

IML Executive Director David Ronnenberg announced the judges for International Mr. Leather and International Boot Black 2026 on Saturday afternoon..

Kinetic sponsored amazing dance parties all weekend with MAL ending on Sunday night with the fabulous Kinetic Closing Dance at the AI Warehouse.

In a world that keeps changing in scary ways, I am thankful to the Centaur MC for a positive weekend of joy and tradition.

IML and IMBB 2026 judges named, new rules

As east coast tradition has it, the International Mr. Leather and International Boot Black 2026 judges were introduced to the public during a reception at Mid-Atlantic Leather at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in January. IML 3035 Rene Hebert returns to judge his successor.

David Ronnenberg sent the following staff chart: "There is a lot of work that goes into building the vision of IMLBB and I could not do it alone. CLAW moving to Columbus
By Bob Miller

CLAW 26 will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus, Ohio. With more than 600 guest rooms and 70,000 square feet of meeting space. Rooms rates begin at $199/night, reservations and registrations are open.

With strong ties to Mid-Atlantic Leather Weekend in Washington, DC, the Hyatt team understands the culture and needs of our community. In our meetings they displayed a genuine eagerness to celebrate and support our unique community.

Columbus is a vibrant, LGBTQ+-friendly city, offering a fresh backdrop and new energy to elevate your CLAW experience. The Hyatt in Columbus promises a dynamic and inclusive space for connection, education, and celebration.

Meet, learn, play, and explore in an unforgettable Leather weekend where everyone belongs and the energy never stops. The following are main features of CLAW 26: 2,000-plus Leathermen, two BDSM Dungeons, 118 Booth Vendor Mart, 100+ Skills and Ed Classes and Workshops, Dozens of Kink Socials and Mixers, International Leather Family Dinner, World Famous Cigar Deck, Fetish Speed Dating, Pet/Pup Moshes, Silent Auctions, Kinky Art Show, Leather Game Shows, Drag Brunch and Bingo, Bound and Beautiful, and Kinky Kabaret.

Since our inception in 2001, Cleveland, along with our dedicated volunteers and local partners, has been the heart and home of our annual Leather Weekend. It holds deep meaning for all of us, and has played a vital role shaping our history, tradition and spirit. The decision to move was made only after a long and difficult 18-month search for a suitable venue in or around Cleveland. None of the hotels or convention spaces in Cleveland chose to offer us a contract, even on Easter weekend, a historically quiet weekend for convention sized hotels.

This move does not necessarily mean a permanent departure from our long-standing home in Cleveland. If new opportunities arise, particularly regarding suitable venues in the future, we remain open and hopeful about the possibility of returning.

CLAW — Leather Thanksgiving

CLAW’s Leather Thanksgiving was held November 26–30 at the Hotel Indigo in downtown Los Angeles. The entire hotel was reserved for the event – all the guest rooms and meeting space including the pool and the 18 Social Club on the top floor.

The schedule included the Hercules dungeon parties, Horsemarket, the vendor mart, education, dark rooms, cigar deck, speed dating, pool parties, various other parties and socials, the Chosen Family Leather Thanksgiving Dinner.

CLAW also sold authentic, numbered prints by REX which they inherited upon the artist’s death a year earlier.

The dungeon was equipped and operated by Avatar LA and the darkroom was run by volunteers from Payasos. CLAW teamed up with Leather AF for a party at Eagle LA on Saturday night, and the Ben Orson Leather Cigar Deck was busy all weekend.

There were dozens of Skills & Education workshops, and several speed dating sessions, pool parties and affinity socials made it easier for line minded leather men to meet one another.

The raffle was sponsored by LALP. The Leather Hall of Fame recognized the inductions of Drummer Magazine, writer Geoff Mains and rubber/latex innovator Charles Guyette.

For the first time, an entire floor of the hotel became a dark room. No hotel employees on the 17th floor, including no housekeeping. Attendees signed up for the 17th floor quickly and the environment on that floor was very exciting day and night, all weekend long.

Also had sex-friendly parties in 18 Social, the private club on the top floor, including Encuerados on Friday night, and Furball on Saturday night. Porn stars Drew Sebastian and Carlo Cox hosted those parties. Drew was also the featured entertainment at Kinky Kabaret, held at The Precinct on Sunday night.

There were Education and Skills classes throughout Leather Thanksgiving including Boy Kevin's presentation of Bootblacking and Leather Care 101. The basic steps and techniques to care for, condition and shine your gear so it will last a lifetime. Matthew Jensen taught Advanced Fisting.

Leather Thanksgiving featured an historic boot sale: more than 400 pairs of boots from the estate of Steve Ng were available for deeply discounted prices, including hundreds of pairs of Dehners in sizes 8 – 13, Wescos, Paul Bond and many other premium brands.

The official wind up event at all CLAW weekends has been the Kinky Kabaret on Sunday nights. The CLAW LA version saw Hector Villaneuva-Smith being named Volunteer of the Year. He produced and directed and co-emceed the Kinky Kabaret at Precinct LA.

SOMA's Leather and queer spaces

Since the 1960s, SOMA's Leather and queer spaces have been the places where people were finally seen — where they found safety, family, and the freedom to be themselves.

This year, we honored those stories in a powerful new way: the first five bronze Leather Legacy Landmark sidewalk plaques were installed on Folsom Street — celebrating the bars, clubs, and gathering spaces that shaped our culture, and changed our lives. Finally, they are marked with the dignity they deserve.

But 72 more stories are waiting to be told.

Seventy-two more sites deserve to be marked, remembered and celebrated — ensuring that our community’s joy, struggle, kink, creativity, and resilience remain rooted in the streets where it all happened.

As we look toward 2026 and beyond, your gift makes that possible.

When you give, you help put more plaques in the ground. You keep our stories alive, visible, and un-erasable. You allow us to honor the people who built this neighborhood and protect the spaces that continue to bring us together.

Your gift helps our history stay public, proud, and permanent Leather and queer spaces have been the places where people were finally seen—where they found safety, family, and the freedom to be themselves.

Leather Archives welcomes new board member

Please join the Leather Archives & Museum in welcoming its newest board member, Jackie Thompson! Jackie begins a three-year term with the LA&M, bringing a strong commitment to community. American Leatherwoman 2017,18-year member of the Highwaymen TNT, Ms. Capitol Pride Leather 2009, former gay rodeo competitor and Vice President of the Atlantic States Gay Rodeo Association, and longtime event organizer.

Community-minded. Organizer. Side-eye expert. Big laugh. Bigger heart. And despite what she claims, Jackie is absolutely not innocent. If Jackie were telling her own story, it would start like an old black-and-white film, shift into a touch of Paris Is Burning, and then toss in a bit of the Mineshaft. Originally from the Mid-Atlantic Leather area, Jackie currently resides in Gatineau, Quebec with her wife of five years… and lots of maple syrup.

Past International Drummerboy Ryan Goldner passes
By Philadelphians MC

Philadelphians MC was shocked and saddened to learn of the recent passing of long time former Captain and Life Brother Ryan Goldner at the age of 52.
Ryan was a force of nature.

His humor, creativity, and passion for serving the LGBTQ+ community were undeniable. His energy and laughter ignited and overflowed every single room he entered. With a few bucks and a trip to the Dollar Store he could whip up costumes, props, and themes for the most amazing cocktail parties, fundraisers, bar nights, Leather contests, and trivia nights imaginable. As one of the producers of the American Leather Family weekend he helped create a legacy of service to the community. One of his super powers was motivating people around him to dig in and get involved.

He was the brains, heart, and soul behind countless signature Philadelphians MC events and traditions, including: Water Ballet at Olympia (mermaids, swans, sharks, Jackie O's, Amy Winehouses); the Living Nativity at the Bike Stop; the Jenny Jones Make-Over Challenge at Tri-Cen; the Potomac MC Liver Transplant cocktail party at Olympia ("Don't take your livers to heaven, heaven knows the Potomacs need them here"); Fritos in my Speedos at State Fair; the Bacon Toss at Tri Cen; the Burning of the Barbie on the Bonfire at State Fair; Greased Pig Wrestling at State Fair; twisted table decorations at Olympia ("My Little Centaur", "Philadelphians Eating Tasty Animals"); hyper-specific leather contest themed eye opener cocktail parties at Pennsmen runs ("Mr. International House of Pancakes Leather," "Mr. All You Can Eat Breakfast Buffet Bar Bear"); and many, many more.

After moving on from Philadelphia, Ryan and his husband Scott Reikofski, along with their many cats and a dog, lived in Wilmington, DE, and Phoenix, AZ, before emigrating to Ajijic in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Ryan gave freely of his time and energy to so many groups everywhere he lived, including SafeGuards, Philly AIDS Thrift, the Mazzoni Center (all PA), the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (AZ), and Ajijic Cares (MX).
Our hearts are with Scott as we remember Ryan and all that he did for the people in his world everywhere he went. He will be greatly missed.

Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District – Busy 2025

We’re reflecting on how far we’ve come — and how much more there is to do. In a time when kinky and queer spaces are being displaced or gentrified, the work of the Leather & LGBTQ Cultural District has never been more vital. Our mission is not only to preserve our history but to ensure our culture, art, and community continue to thrive right here in San Francisco’s SOMA.

This year, we’ve made incredible progress in celebrating and protecting SOMA’s Leather and LGBTQ communities and their legacies. Specifically,

LeatherWalk 2025: our annual celebratory march for visibility and camaraderie. Sidewalk Plaques: the first ones were installed at historic locations on Folsom Street. Safety strategies: Community Forums, Narcan and fentanyl test strip distribution. We also brought our community together for town halls, beer busts, an Anniversary Party, the Golden Dildeaux Awards, SOMA Walking Tours, Leather Alley at Pride, our Kink & Draw Quarterly, a t-shirt art competition and our Gear Swap N Shop. We supported community entrepreneurs with training, assistance with permits and zoning issues, and legislation enabling previously banned bathhouses.

Membership dues are $15 per year. Anyone may request a Hardship Dues Waiver.

Satyrs MC 71st Anniversary

The Satyrs Motorcycle Club celebrated their 71st Anniversary with a club-prepared dinner at MCC in the Valley in North Hollywood, CA on Saturday night, November 29.

The Satyrs Motorcycle Club of Los Angeles is the oldest running gay men’s motorcycle club and organization in the world. Formed in 1954 during the height of the McCarthy era, seven men came together, bonded by the love of the motorcycle to form a club. It was not an easy time in America for gay men to congregate with fellow gay men. Homosexuals were deemed as deviants and undesirables in society.

he Satyrs are currently preserving the club’s archives to be entrusted in the near future at the One Archives Foundation for public and academic studies.

Race Bannon honored with Lifetime of Commitment Award

On November 30th, at their annual Light in the Grove gala, the National AIDS Memorial gave Race Bannon their Lifetime of Commitment Award.
The National AIDS Memorial (https://www.aidsmemorial.org) offers healing, hope, remembrance, and history about the AIDS epidemic in America through various programs, maintaining the National AIDS Memorial Grove in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, and by overseeing the AIDS Memorial Quilt.

When awarding the honor to Bannon, the National AIDS Memorial wrote this: “As a writer, speaker, and community leader, Race Bannon has worked tirelessly to destigmatize sexual health and uplift those most impacted by HIV.

For over four decades, Race has been a leading voice in LGBTQ+ health, kink-positive activism, and HIV/AIDS education. His work has helped shape more inclusive conversations about wellness, identity, and human connection—making an indelible impact on generations of advocates.

During Bannon’s acceptance speech, he referenced how lucky he felt to receive the award.
"In many ways the reason I am up here today is sheer luck. Lucky that I have had great mentors to guide me. Lucky that I have had stellar models to emulate, many of whom are in this room. Lucky that the unpredictable life path behind me somehow led me to doing so much that I love to do, whether that was gay men’s public health and HIV/STI prevention and treatment advocacy, leadership and community work in the leather community, or in LGBTQ+ activism and organizing. I'm glad I chose to follow the forks in the road ahead of me when presented. I've had a good life and intend to keep doing so, and keep doing the work I’ve been doing."

Tom of Finland Foundation presents Artists-In-Residence
By Sharp

Drawing from the Foundation’s collections, FXLK PLAY brings together work spanning over 60 LGBTQ+ artists from its Artist-in-Residence Program. The exhibition opens Thursday, February 19, at Long Hall, with opening-night festivities at Great Hall from 5–9 PM in Plummer Park, West Hollywood and will include remarks, a keynote address, a panel discussion with past and current residents, a performance, and a reception.

Curated by LA-based historian Jamison Edgar, FXLK PLAY transforms Long Hall into an immersive exhibition of painting, sculpture, and video that evokes the maximalist nature of TOM House and its world-renowned erotic art archive. The exhibition positions the Foundation as a living site of queer myth making, where artists not only draw upon Tom’s legacy but bend it, stretch it, and slip into it in ways that leave it forever changed in their image.

The exhibition runs from February 19 through March 19, Thursdays through Sundays, noon–5 PM, with docents on site. Free public programs throughout West Hollywood, organized with local partners, reflect the Foundation’s commitment to welcoming all LGBTQ+ identities, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The exhibition is organized into three thematic collections and features an immersive installation of artists’ videos, a listening station with reflections from past residents, and a comprehensive timeline of TOM House from 1979 to 2026.

By Nick Kotwica

Mr. Anvil Phoenix 2025 Ben Calderon unveiled the State of Arizona Leather Pride Flag during a press conference on October 9 attended by political and community leaders, representatives of the local and national Leather communities, and friends and family.

With this unveiling, Arizona becomes the second state to adopt a state Leather pride flag, following Colorado. The announcement marked a historic moment for the visibility and unity of Arizona's Leather community.

Designed by Calderon, the flag incorporates imagery reflecting both Arizona’s identity and core Leather community values. In his remarks, Calderon explained the symbolism behind the design, "Those red and gold rays are beaming out of the heart, ensuring those bonds formed by love and passion shine brightly on the community. The blue, black and single white stripe provides comfort and familiarity to our community. Seeing this symbol hanging at your favorite bar, you'll know this is where you belong. Arizona's Leather Community is a collective characterized by integrity, solidarity and safety. Yes, this flag is my design. But Arizona: this is OUR flag!"

Calderon also announced that the prototype of the Arizona Leather Pride Flag will be donated to the Leather Archives & Museum in Chicago, preserving the flag as part of the national history of Leather culture.

The unveiling stands as a significant contribution to Arizona Leather history, affirming community pride, shared values, and a lasting sense of belonging.
