Tom of Finland's 100th Birthday

Tom of Finland (born Touko Laaksonen, born May 8, 1920, and died November 7, 1991) has long been recognized as one of the 20th century’s great visual innovators. As he confronted the stigmas and stereotypes that long burdened homosexual desire, his depictions of empowered gay men fully enjoying their sexuality proved liberating on social and aesthetic levels alike. His work assumes a key role in the art historical discourse (Tom’s drawings are in the collections of institutions like The Museum of Modern Art, New York and regularly appear in museum shows throughout the world), but also occupies a place in every corner of the popular imagination. Tom devoted his life, his artistic career that spanned over five decades, to the vision of Homosexuals being free to be happy in loving whomever they desired – and in turn, for all of society to be supportive of his view. In many parts of the world it’s not safe to be LGBTQ+, so there is still much work to be done. On May 8, we encourage all to make something beautiful and share it – bake a cake, open a bottle of wine and raise a toast to Tom for all that he created and left us in his legacy. - Durk Dehner, President and cofounder, Tom of Finland Foundation. On May 8, 2020 Tom would have turned 100 years old and many celebrations have been planned internationally.

By Margaret Smith for Westford Eagle of Westford, MA

Divergent Donations Foundation, based in Chelmsford, has raised more than $500,000 in resources since its founding in 2016. The organization has distributed HIV/AIDS medications to more than 42 countries through AID for AIDS International in New York City. “Currently there exists a similar universe with the COVID 19 crisis and the AIDS crisis with the outbreak of HIV/AIDS over 30 years ago,” said Kevin Barry, who founded Divergent Donations Foundation with his partner Jeph Barry. The organization began out of concern for HIV and AIDS patients who lacked access to drugs that can keep a patient’s viral load manageable. See whole story at

DC Eagle to close permanently

By John Riley for Metro Weekly

The DC Eagle, long a bastion of the Washington, DC Leather scene, is closing its doors permanently, according to multiple sources. Employees of the club were informed in a Zoom meeting on Monday, May 4, that the building, located at 3701 Benning Road NE, had been sold and that there were no plans to relocate or reopen the business. The bar had changed ownership several times over its history. It is currently owned and operated by Theodore Clements and Peter Lloyd, under the business entity Eagle N Exile, LLC. The business is reportedly to be dissolved, according to one employee who spoke to Metro Weekly on condition of anonymity in order to talk openly.

Midwest Puppy and Handler to cancel contest for 2020

Because of the uncertainty of these times and the overwhelming number of other events that have been rescheduled tor October, the Board of Midwest Puppy and Handler unanimously voted to cancel the Midwest Puppy and Handler Contest that was to be held October 23-25. The current plan is to have a social gathering that weekend instead of the contest. There will be an evening bar social on Friday night, a group dinner Saturday evening, and brunch on Sunday. Even if the pandemic has subsided by October, it is clear that having 10-15 leather events, puppy events, rubber events and/or contests in one month is not beneficial for either the community or those planning to participate. The current Midwest Puppy and Handler titleholders have been made aware and have chosen to represent Midwest Puppy and Handler into 2021.
