Philadelphia Leather Pride Night workerbees by Corey Brent

Philadelphia Leather Pride grows by 25 percent
By Cowboi Jen
Philadelphia Leather Pride Night along with staff, volunteers, emcee's Jim and Arne Granell-Bennett and auctioneer Jo Arnone donated $6,400 to charities. PLPN, with 160 attendees, took place September 30 at Voyeur Nightclub in Philadelphia, PA with a new format mixing the live auction with a throw back Leather party hosted by Ms Philadelphia Leather 2017 Heather Raquel and Ms NJ Leather 2017 Velvet Storm. The night started off with An Intimate Conversation with Sir Guy from New York City then onto the live charity auction with items ranging from jock straps, art work, clothes, toys, nights at a local BDSM B&B, and our big seller Zebriannas Crack Brownies. ASL Interpreters Kevin Lowerly and former Ms World Leather Michelle Jackson helped ensure Philadelphia Leather Pride Night is inclusive. Off-the-body auctions with Heather Raquel and 2017 Philadelphia Fetish Z Black Onyx were sponsored by Passional Boutique and Sexploratorium and were a huge hit along with go go dancers including Mr. NYC Eagle John John, raising money for their chosen charity of GALAE . Other charity partners were the Leather Archives and Museum, Philadelphia Aids Thrift and By The Grace of George. Next year will be Philadelphia Leather Pride Night's 10th Anniversary. http://www.plpn.org

Racism rears its ugly head in Leather community
We have received reports of a racist attack upon one past African American titleholder at a bar in Chicago the first full weekend of October. Social medaia was abuzz about it with no names given. The titleholder was called a "flying monkey" and was told that he did not fit the image of what Tom of Finland and Chuck Renslow had in mind when they formed IML. (Not sure Tom of Finland had input.) The best reaction to this most recent act of racism was a Facebook post by Joey Arteaga of Chicago. We publish this link stating it is the opinion of Joey Arteaga and not necessarily of The Leather Journal, but do know that we abhor racism and a lot of other isms out there. https://www.facebook.com/joee.arteaga?fref=ufi Note: There have been three black IMLs over the years and they are 1984 Ron Moore, 1991 Dee Canon and 2014 Ramien Pierre. What was the Martin Luther King thing about judging (one) by their character and not by the color of their skin? I knew Chuck Renslow and he never was guilty of racial discrimination. There should be no safe harbor for racism in the Leather community.

Everyone safe at DomCon: New Orleans
Mistress Cyan, coproducer of DomCon: Los Angeles told The Leather Journal by phone that everyone was safe at DomCon: New Orleans and that Hurricane Nate barely hit The Big Easy. It did "dramatically effect attendance" as people in the region applied "better safe than sorry" and stayed home. Cyan also noted that a 7 PM curfew on the night the storm hit was lifted at about 7:30 PM as it became clear that the Category One storm was hitting eastern Louisiana and Mississippi. The French quarter is in higher elevation and is thus less susceptible to flooding. More details on DomCon: New Orleans are available at http://www.DomConNewOrleans.com As of Tuesday morning, October 10, the site had nothing about the hurricane.

Saratoga Springs safe
Santa Ana winds have winged devastating wildfires all over California with cities north of San Francisco bearing the brunt. Over 2,000 structures were reported to have been destroyed and the resort known as Saratoga Springs is not one of them. Several Leather/kink/BDSM events such as The 15 Association's Bootcamp and Gear Up Weekend as well as nudist groups and others hold annual weekend events there. We have had reports of Leatherfolk and kinksters being displaced or forced to evacuate. Anna from Saratoga Springs said on Wednesday afternoon, "All remains well in our little valley at this time, just smoky and hazy. Again, many thanks for those checking in on us. The fire that is most relevant to Saratoga and that we are keeping a close watch on is now known as the 'Mendocino Lake Complex Fire' (formerly the Redwood Complex Fire) and incorporates the Redwood Valley and Potter Valley fires." New antibody attacks 99-perecent of HIV strains
According to the BBC, Scientists have engineered an antibody that attacks 99-percent of HIV strains and can prevent infection in primates. It is built to attack three critical parts of the virus - making it harder for HIV to resist its effects. The work is a collaboration between the US National Institutes of Health and the pharmaceutical company Sanofi. The International AIDS Society said it was an "exciting breakthrough." Human trials will start in 2018 to see if it can prevent or treat infection. Our bodies struggle to fight HIV because of the virus' incredible ability to mutate and change its appearance. These varieties of HIV - or strains - in a single patient are comparable to those of influenza during a worldwide flu season. So the immune system finds itself in a fight against an insurmountable number of strains of HIV. Read more at http://www.bbc.com/news/health-41351159
