Supreme Court rules - Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to LGBTQ

Everyone already knows, but we just have to celebrate here, nonetheless. On June 15, the US Supreme Court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis sex, also protects employees from discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This decision confirms workplace anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people across the country. In the opinion, Justice Gorsuch wrote that when an employer fires an individual for being LGBT “fires that person for traits or actions it would not have questioned in members of a different sex. Sex plays a necessary and undisguisable role in the decision, exactly what Title VII forbids. … the limits of the drafters’ imagination supply no reason to ignore the law’s demands. When the express terms of a statute give us one answer and extratextual considerations suggest another, it’s no contest. Only the written word is the law, and all persons are entitled to its benefit.”

Long time Satyrs MC member John Laird passes

It is with great regret to announce that one of the Satyrs Motorcycle Club's beloved members, John Laird passed away due to natural causes on June 7 at the age of 84 years, having been born on February 28, 1936. John first joined the club in the late 50's. John had a stroke several years ago and was in a nursing home till his death. John was one of six members who worked with men for interviews leading to the documentary, Original Pride. He also was part of the group of Satyrs who helped to get gay motorcycle clubs going in many cities like New York, Washington, DC and other cities. He always had a story to tell and can make people laugh and was one of the early members who fought for gay rights and protections. John volunteered for the ONE Institute and Tom of Finland Foundation. John is being interred with Military Honors in Texas. In lieu of flowers it is requested to make donations to http://www.hairdreamsbychristal.org/ It is an organization for people who lost their hair due to accident or illness.

Touche' could open soon

With great relief, the City of Chicago moved to Phase 3 of reopening the first week of June. This has meant more businesses reopening and a step forward for Touches’ return to business under Phase 4 when it begins. Just this past Saturday, the Chicago Tribune reported that the State is looking to move to Phase 4 on June 29 with Chicago eyeing July 1. We have yet to receive any official notice on these dates, but our fingers are most definitely crossed. Bear in mind, we must wait to see the effects of recent demonstrations on the Covid 19 pandemic. LALC CAReS - LALC Lifeline

The LALC Lifelne, one of the three divisions of LALC CAReS, now has a phone number for people in the community to call if they feel the need to talk with someone. This is NOT a crises hotline or a number for someone needing mental health assistance, it is simply a line for people who need someone to talk to. We will have people who are qualified life coaches and therapists we are getting together for referrals for that. The phone number is (833) 373-0051. The way this works is that when someone calls in, they are given the option of speaking to a male-identified person, a female-identified person, or a non-binary identified person. After they choose, everyone who has volunteered to help as a call receiver, will have their phone ring, all simultaneously.

Des Moines LGBTQ bar raided for helping BLM protesters

The Blazing Saddle, a 37-year-old LGBTQ bar in downtown Des Moines, was raided this week after staff gave medical help to Black Lives Matter protesters coming from the nearby state capitol. The raid took place on Monday, June 1, but only attracted attention on Friday. This is the third attack by police on LGBTQ bars that have given support to the BLM protests that have been taking place across the country. Local media has been silent about the raid. The bar described what happened and shared video from their own security cameras on their Facebook page. According to the bar, the staff had been watching the news of BLM protests at the Iowa State Capitol, which is only blocks away. The news coverage showed protesters being told to disperse and getting hit with tear gas. Three staff members went outside....See the rest of the story

A Blast From The Past
