Joseph W. Croteau Jr., aka boy joe , 50, of San Diego, CA, passed away due to a heart attack on November 2, 2011 at his home. He was a native of Maine and was a newcomer to the Leather community. Along with his mentor, life partner and conjunctive titleholder, Daddy Don Cherkis, he shared a passion for reaching out to and serving not only the Leather community, but all GLBT events.
As San Diego Leather boy 2005, boy joe raised funds for the Second Annual Western boy Run, the Ms World Leather Endowment fund, Hillcrest Youth Center and organized the White Elephant Christmas party, a toy drive for local children. Along with Daddy Don, he raised funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, earning him nominations for two Pantheon of Leather Awards. He was the president of the San Diego boys of Leather, board member at large for Club X, a member of Red Hankies of San Diego and the Imperial Court de San Diego.
As a member of Mama’s Family, he was known as Mama’s San Diego Leather boy. In January 2006, he competed alongside his Daddy and won the title of US Leatherboy 2006.
He also enjoyed teaching sign language to the deaf, singing, playing many instruments, watching the polar bears at the San Diego Zoo, and playing catch with his dog, Molly.
In addition to his life partner of eight years, Daddy Don, he is survived by his mother, three brothers and a sister, his wife, two daughters and three grandchildren.
