Folsom Europe - a body positive

By Lady Katarina

Berlin, Germany is no stranger to a body positive, sexual revolution, expression and forum for public nudity.

I was pleasantly surprised at the difference between Folsom Europe and Folsom San Francisco; and while my experience of Folsom Europe was but a glimpse of what Folsom had to offer it was wonderful welcoming and interconnecting experience. It was a personal experience of camaraderie and exchange vs. a contrast of isolation of a sea of Grindr and Scruff of amateurs playing BDSM roulette.

What I saw was gear, lots of gear and outfits, and less ill-fitted harnesses. Titleholders and attendees talked and connected in a forum that was different than an outdoor kink and sex fest and was one in which was a showcase and runway for the craft, outfits, and a tradition of European hospitality. Maybe it was due to the numerous play parties and bar crawls that presented themselves during the week, but it was an event that made one feel welcomed and not chilled out on a hot day but relaxed in comfort. I particularly liked the many picnic tables that were available to sit down and enjoy ones food, beer, drinks, and hearty conversation.

Time seemed to fly, and I know for me eight hours flew by, but time does that in Berlin. Throw in with a twist of conclave Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and freedom of men and women simply be free without pretenses, it made for a cocktail of sweet proportions that one would most definitely remember the next day.

The title conference proved to be a lively event that started off with a champagne meet and greet followed by a conference with three topics that addressed Titleholder responsibilities working model, being inclusive to women in your clubs (Mrs. Sidney 2016), and Chem Sex (Mr Latex France 2016).

The “Classic meets Fetish,” concert on Thursday proved to be a wonderful experience with Leather people, kinksters, puppies, titleholder, and Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. The concert was an amazing auditory and visual delight.

Ash Hodge, a flute player, flags orange, and this was his first Folsom said, “Kink and Music is part of who I am every day, and I love the idea of combining my loves together.”

Tuba Jack, conductor and piano player, said “I appreciate the intimacy and creation of art and creativity in all aspects of his life. When you can combine art and kink together and let it inform each other, the things that are going to affect your heart one way, or your senses, or sensory perceptions, will be true for kink, for sex, for whatever; it's going to be true for your art as well. When you an combine the two what you say artistically makes the most sense and speaks to people.

There will be vendors from around the country and locally who will be selling some of the finest and most interesting wares in town. Here is an opportunity to handle and size those "special" items for which one has been looking.

The sampler booths will give Leather/BDSM/Fetish/Gearfolk a chance to try some activities they may only have been fantasizing about.  Try out the violet wand, or a flogger, or a needle or two. What does a cane feel like? Here is a chance to get a small taste in a safe and fun atmosphere.

Join Threshold on the night of November 1 for the club's version of Dia De Los Muertos, Day of the Dead, play party. It is the night the "spirits," so get closest to the land of the living and celebrate the night away. This party is open to the community and admission is $20.

NCSF conducting Mental Health Survey

NCSF The NCSF (National Coalition for Sexual Freedom) is inviting Leather / BDSM / Kinkfolk to take its Mental Health Survey. They would like to know more about your BDSM practices, mental health and relational violence experiences.

The NCSF is working with researchers at Sam Houston University's Department of Psychology and Philosophy who will compare our responses to two other sample populations - one college-aged and the other LGBT-identified.

The NCSF will use these results to help with its advocacy, benefiting both existing and developing programs. Specifically, the study's results will assist in educating law enforcement, legal and psychological professionals about the practices and mental health of BDSM practitioners.

The survey will take approximately 35 minutes of one's time.

This survey is anonymous. Neither the NCSF nor outside researchers have access to any identifying information about participants.

images/articles/news/sash-bash/Olympus_2014/2014_Contestants_Photos/Central Canada Ms Badschoolgirl.jpgMartine Ling Chu (aka BadSchoolgirl on Fetlife), the current Ms Central Canada Olympus Leather, has become the first female pledge to The Ottawa Knights, a formerly all-male, Leather and Denim club located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

In November of 2013 the Ottawa Knights amended their constitution to allow all people who reached the age of 21 and who had a common interest in the mandate of the club to apply for membership. Given that Martine had received much support from the club as Ms Central Canada Olympus Leather, and was volunteering at the club's bar nights, she felt that it would be appropriate for her to seek membership. She submitted her application in late March of 2014 and at the club meeting on June 19 she became their first female pledge. Martine's husband, Jeff, joined the Ottawa Knights in 2012. With her appointment, they are the first heterosexual married couple to be members. Martine and Jeff were also the first married couple to compete in the International Olympus Leather contest in 2012.

Closing of Le Fleur de Lis In Redlands, CA

Financial and health difficulties have contributed to the planned closing of the first and only dungeon to be open in the Inland Empire (Redlands, CA). It was announced by the management of the club that the official closing will be the end of September, 2013. However, there is the possibility of the club staying open if there is an interest by an organization or individual to take it over. The owners of the club are hoping that someone will come forward that can provide the financial backing needed to keep a club such as Le Fleur de Lis open and operating.

Jon Nizzi passed on July 24, 2014

M Leather Ottawa Jon Nizi By Daniela Plume WebOn the evening of Thursday, July 24, 2014, the Ottawa Leather/Kink/Pup communities were shocked to learn of the death of Mr. Leather Ottawa 2014 Jon Nizzi. "Nizzi," as he was affectionately called by his many friends, had been a driving force in the various communities since moving from Toronto in 2013. In November of 2013, Jon won the Mr. Leather Ottawa title and went on to compete in the International Mr. Leather contest in May 2014, where he placed in the top 20 of a field of 46.

As news of his death became known late Thursday night, messages of grief, tribute and condolence from friends across North America and in the international Leather community had begun to fill his Facebook profile.

“With a smile from knowing you and quite a few tears I’m headed to bed; glad that you’ll rest well brother. (Pats and scritches) We will make sure Loki’s taken care of,” wrote International Mr. Leather 2012 Woody Woodruff.

A poignant photo of the Leather Pride flag flying at half mast was posted by Ms Leather Toronto 2013 Youkali Youkali.

images/articles/news/regional/2013_Events/Folsom_Street_Fair_2013_Story/IMG_5611 Web.jpgThe Folsom Street Fair will take place on Folsom Street between 8th and 13th Streets on Sunday, September 21 from 11 AM - 6 PM.

While the South of Market streets have changed fairly drastically over the last 20 years, the location of Folsom Street Fair hasn't changed at all. In 1995, the fair expanded its footprint to include the block of Folsom between 11th and 12th Streets; however, in all of the years since then, the fair's footprint has remained constant and unwavering. Until this year, that is. For the first time since 1995, Folsom Street Fair will be updating its layout to accommodate the needs of a changing city.

According to Executive Director Demetri Moshoyannis, "The Board of Directors agreed to move the fair slightly in order to achieve three major objectives: 1. Improving street traffic around the fair; 2. Minimizing impact on residential side streets; and, 3. Engaging new community businesses. The shift of just one block in our fair footprint means that we can improve traffic flow by opening up 8th Street to live traffic; we can engage fewer residential side streets; and, we can create new or improved relationships with community businesses like The SF Eagle, Sports Authority, and Cat Head's BBQ - all of whom will be able to participate more actively now. Getting the Eagle onto the fairgrounds feels especially relevant for many of us in the Leather community."
