Red Dragons to Sponsor National BDSM/Leather Events!
November 13th, 2013
Los Angeles, California
The vision Master Drew, the Founder and President of the Red Dragon’s Riding Club, set for the RDRC focused on it being a part of the national BDSM/ Leather community, and with every passing year, this vision becomes more and more a reality.
First conceived in 2009, Master Drew officially founded the Red Dragons in 2010 in Southern California. As the Mother Chapter, the Red Dragons immediately pushed forward by volunteering to fund-raise, staff, work, develop, create and support a wide variety of BDSM and Leather events around Southern California. Their annually held Full Throttle event lent its support to the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom (NCSF) and the Red Dragon’s Annual Toy Auction has raised thousands of dollars for toys that were then delivered to the children of Marines at Camp Pendleton.
This example of service and dedication within the BDSM/Leather community had others watching and they too wanted to join this great and amazing “ride”. Master Drew’s vision of a national organization with other chapters was realized when, in November 2012, the first new chapter was granted a charter in Arizona: the Red Dragons Centennial Chapter was formed and headed by Master Tanner. Just four months later, in March of 2013, the Red Dragons expanded yet again in the Pacific Northwest when Master Stormmy was granted a charter for the Red Dragons Evergreen Chapter.
Each of these chapters have grown and strengthened and with their success, Master Drew decided to expand further to the east and accepted his fourth chapter in November of 2013. The Red Dragons Lagniappe Chapter in Louisiana is ably led by Drop Dead Fred and in true Red Dragons tradition; this group immediately dove in head first to start supporting more growth in their own local area.
This year, all the Red Dragons Chapters are teaming up and sponsoring National Leather events around the country, so look for them and their Logo at an event near you!
Dr. Brad Sagarin, one of the leading researchers in the physiological and psychological effects of BDSM, will return to the Southwest Leather Conference in January 2013 to share the latest scientific research on BDSM/Leather in the post-pathology era and will continue studies during the Sunday afternoon Dance Of Souls event at the conference.
A learned research team will join Dr. Sagarin at Southwest Leather Conference to discuss the results of previous studies including a large-scale comparison of personality traits in BDSM practitioners and non-BDSM controls (spoiler alert: BDSM folks come out looking pretty good), experimental evidence that empathy softens sadism, and an academic analysis of the benefits of explicit discussions about consent over silent assumptions. The team will also share the latest results from their lab including a Switch Study that produced the first known objective evidence that BDSM causes altered states of consciousness.
The 2013 change in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistic Manual) that depathologized sadomasochism has opened the doors to more mainstream research pertaining to sadomasochism including studies that show positive benefits of BDSM. Dr Sagarin has been a forerunner in scientific BDSM research and this change allows him even more latitude to further his investigations.
Leather Men's Brotherhood Presents Checks Totaling $20,000
By Ed Nicholas
At their January Volunteer Appreciation Party at Fort Lauderdale’s Mojo Restaurant, Leather Men’s Brotherhood presented checks for $20,000 to the two organizations that had been promised grants from Leather Masked Ball proceeds.
$10,000 was given to Broward House. These funds were approved as seed money for Broward House to kick off a Gay Teen Suicide Prevention effort. Broward House grant writer Alan Tiano reported that LMB’s grant had enabled the organization to obtain an additional $30,000 and that the program is now almost completely funded.
$10,000 was presented to the Leather Archives and Museum in Chicago as a sustaining gift. This is the sixth year LMB has contributed to the Leather Archives. Rick Storer, the executive director of Leather Archives and Museum notes that this amounts to five percent of the Leather Archives and Museum's annual operating budget.
Lambda Men’s Brotherhood, Inc. and Leather Men’s Brotherhood is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that produces the Leather Masked Ball as a Leather community outreach to create community partnerships through education and philanthropy, with emphasis on donating to important GLBT community needs and supporting the leather community.
LMB President Ken Fiegel noted as he thanked volunteers assembled that in its six year history The Leather Masked Ball has raised over $110,000 for community non-profits.
Ron Blakeley received the Volunteer of the Year award for outstanding service at numerous evens throughout the year.
The Leather Men’s Brotherhood intends to expand its sponsorships of and outreach to small local Leather events and contests around the southeast and in other targeted areas. These events are the backbone of the Leather community and LMB recognizes that most of these events, especially the small ones operated by volunteer organizations, face real challenges in securing corporate sponsorship. LMB believes that this outreach will help continue to build The Leather Masked Ball into a destination event in future years.
