Overcast skies create Leather weather for Folsom Street Fair 2014

By October 02, 2014

IMG 1773 WebThe 2014 version of the Folsom Street Fair took place in perfect Leather weather on Folsom Street between 8th and 13th Streets on Sunday, September 21, one week earlier than the usual fourth Sunday of September. It was cloudy, not sunny, but was perfect for Leather/BDSM/Fetish/Kink/Gearfolk wearing plenty of Leather - not too cold. The Fair seemed to be crowded earlier than normal and several booths were open just after 6 PM as that usual 5 PM wind did not arrive.

The move one block west did what organizers hoped it would do. That, and the stage moved to 10th Street not far from Howard made for better viewing. The short walk from Folsom Street over to the San Francisco Eagle at Harrison and 12th Streets worked. What had been a parking lot across from the Eagle was converted into a party area with a $20 admission.

Most of the usual suspects had vendor or social booths including The Society of Janus, Steamworks, the San Francisco Bare Chest Calendar Men, Mr. S Leathers, Orchid and Serpent.

IMG 1788 WebThe trend of more people dressing in Leather/Levi/Rubber/Gear and Fetish was obvious. There was a time when the Folsom Street Fair was losing its Leather identity. After a second year that trend seems to be reversed.

Titleholders were introduced on the main stage before 1 PM and there was a Mama's Family photo shoot on Dore Alley adjacent the Powerhouse about an hour later. The good news with that is that Sandy "Mama" Reinhardt was there.

On Wednesday night, September 17 the Leathermen's Discussion Group hosted Gayle Rubin at the San Francisco LGBT Center. Noted Leather historienne, Rubin discussed the history of the Folsom Street Fair. Gayle Rubin, Ph. D., is a scholar and activist who was one of the founders of Samois, the first lesbian SM support group, in 1978. She has been conducting research on =Leather culture and history since the late 1970s, and has been deeply involved in the preservation of leather archives and artifacts.

On Thursday night BLUF hosted their BLUF Folsom Dinner at Don Ramon's on 11th Street. Great socializing at the popular Mexican restaurant with a buffet.

Wicked Grounds celebrated its Fifth Anniversary on Thursday and the AIDS Emergency Fund feted 32 years at Temple with a Leather and Feathers Fashion Show.

The Golden Gate Guards held their Third Annual Leather Cruise of San Francisco Bay. The group met at the Pier Three for the excursion that sailed under the old and new Bay Bridge, Angel Island, Alcatraz, under the Golden Gate Bridge before returning to its dock.

All day Saturday Mr. S Leather had its complimentary beer and soda giveaway and the store was packed. Think sardine can here. The line of customers holding Leather, latex and gear to be purchased was long. This is probably Mr. S Leathers' best day of the year and has become a very popular tradition for those coming from anywhere else in the world.

On Saturday night the SF Citadel held its Folsom Street Eve Party open to all genders and orientations.

Some were thrilled to see bartender Ken Ferraris of Bare Chest Calendar back - yes, he does have some avid fans

The Stompers Boots party was in full swing. Gone were the free hot dogs, but the gang was there and sales appeared to be brisk. The back patio was as crowded as ever and new owner Bear Man had t obe thrilled. His customers certainly were.
