Mid Atlantic Leather draws record crowd

 

 

Mid Atlantic Leather Weekend saw at least 3,000 Leatherfolk and kinsters converge on the host Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC the weekend of January 12-15 where Martel Brown was chosen to be Mr. Mid Atlantic Leather ans Todd White was installed as Centaur Motorcycle Club president.

 

Flights were full as were several alternate hotels as Washington was preparing for the inauguration of a new president.

The biggest draw at Mid Atlantic Leather is the Hyatt Regency's lobby and the Leather Mart. All official events were in the Hyatt Regency. Exhibitors included Anubis Gear, Barking Leather, Bite The Fruit, Boy Butter, Burly Shirts, Fort Troff, Inseam Clothing, Le Chateau Exotique, Leather Bonding, Leatherwerks, Paddlewerks, Stompers Boots, Mr. S Leather, Nasty Pig, Nasty Kink Pigs, Northbound Leather, NY Jox, Obscure Belts, Off Ramp Leathers, Orchid and Serpent Stores, Passional Boutique, Pjur Group, Rubio Leather, Steve Leather, The Leather Man, TLS Rubbergear, Tribal Son, Twin Cities Leather & Latte, and Wolfstryker Leather.

The three major events were Leather Cocktails on Saturday night, the Mr. Mid Atlantic Leather contest on Sunday afternoon and the closing Dark and Twisted Dance at 9:30 Club on Sunday night. Leather Cocktails was the event that gave birth to Mid Atlantic Leather Weekend. Upon entry, guests were greeted by members of Centaur MC who clapped for them as attendees entered the ballroom. There were several buffet tables bearing a feast of hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, tacos, pot stickers, three kinds of macaroni and cheese, and a hosted bar.

The traditional parade of club colors saw about 30 clubs participate. Mid Atlantic Leather 2016 was honored as the Pantheon of Leather Large Event of the Year in September. Mid Atlantic Leather contest founder Al Santora presented to honor to Centaur MC president.

Leather Cocktails and the Mr. Mid Atlantic Leather contest were emceed by Centaur MC member and Mr. Mid Atlantic Leather 1993 Frank Nowicki.

Winner Martel Brown entered the Mr. Mid Atlantic Leather contest as Mr. Pittsburgh Leather Fetish 2017 and is from Pittsburgh, PA. First runner-up Scooby came in as Mr. Connecticut Leather from New Haven, CT and second runner-up Scott Blumstein is from West Palm Beach, FL.

Overall, six contestants vied for the coveted title and opportunity to compete at International Mr. Leather in May. Joining the three finalists were Rick Tedrick of Oakton, VA, Johnny Zoots of Washington, DC and Mr. Double L Leather Joe Woznak of Gaithersburg, MD.

The weather was great and there was a wonderful energy throughout the weekend. The Leather Mart was successful according to all of the vendors The Leather Journal visited.

The formal ceremony of inducting new officers has always been a great stage production during Mid Atlantic Leather. Every year the outgoing officers dim a candle on the club's Centaurnorah, thus dubbed by The Leather Journal. Eight candles representing each office with a center lighting candle. As each new officer was introduced a candle was relit.

New officers for Centaur MC are President Todd White, Vice President Steve Ranger, Treasurer Patrick Grady, Recording Secretary Ricky Mendez, Corresponding Secretary Thomas Idoux, Road Captain Brian Lawton, Tribune Ali Lopez and Centurion John Harders.

Clubs and organizations had cocktails at the Hyatt Regency. Among these were the Mr. International Rubber reception on Friday night, ONYX Gear Auction on Saturday afternoon, MAUL (Mid Atlantic Uniform League) celebrating its 10th year, Nasty Kink Pigs late night party on Saturday and Women's Tea Social following the contest on Sunday afternoon.

SigMa, Washington, DC's BD/SM club, hosted a demo sampler that had to attract at lest 750 people on Saturday afternoon.

The MAL 2017 Bootblack Charity Beneficiary was the Mid Atlantic Deaf Interpreting Fund – a 501 (c)(3) organization that helps bring interpreters to LGBTQ events and offers American Sign Language classes. 20 bootblacks, many titleholders, were busy Friday through Sunday.

Shuttle buses carried guests to the DC Eagle and the Green Lantern each night and the Sunday night closing Dark and Twisted Dance.

The International Mr. Leather 2017 judges were announced early Saturday afternoon. Jon Krongaard of the IML executive committee announced the names of the IML and International Mr. Bootblack judges and emcees. 32 of the IML class of 2017 were on hand. Several changes and additions were mentioned, including the fact that the IML 2017 contest will be held next door to the host Congress Hotel and that Opening Ceremonies with contestants number draw will be on Thursday night.
