With a Mardi Gras theme Great Lakes Leather Alliance 2017 in Indianapolis, IN (September 28-October 1) was a weekend filled with parties, events and play that left all in attendance earning and tossing beads at one another and shouting, “Laissez les bon temps rouler!"
Spirits flowed in the hospitality suite, the Littles held a talent show; Pups held a meet and greet, a mosh pit, and hosted the cookout during the GLLA auction; and Bootblack Alley had a host of guest Bootblacks.

After hours parties included A Masked Affair, a masked lip sync and karaoke party; Friday night Ash Bash cigar, boots, and bourbon party; and a Saturday Victory disco party with Chicago’s DJ Milty that capped off the contest and left all the dancing Leatherfolk deliciously sweaty and ripe.

IML 2016 Patrick Smith gave the Sunday keynote, and he reminded brunch attendees of the importance of preserving Leather Legacy, providing information to those new to Leather, and the positive power of engaging in diplomatic dialogues with those in political opposition to LGBTQ+ and sex-positive communities’ civil and social rights.
Beyond the diverse group of daytime workshops, the weekend kicked off with a Fireside Chat between Douglas O’Keeffe and longtime Leatherman Sir Shane from Detroit, followed by a reception that honored the life of Chuck Renslow. Vi Johnson and the Carter/Johnson Leather Library team opened their collections to attendees; Northern Illinois University’s Science of BDSM Research Panel was on hand and collecting research surveys.

IML 2016 Patrick Smith educated folks on the his new http://www.Leatherpedia.org wiki; Christina Court screened her internationally award-winning short documentary about the LA&M, “By The People;” and the Bootblack Lounge included a “Rise and Shine” Bootblack Lab. New this year, GLLA also hosted an open Mentoring Dungeon, where folks could drop in for 90-minute hands-on experiences with players skilled in impact play, rope, needles and medical play, and electro.

Mornings began with meditation with Master Thay Z and, new this year, Chicago’s Leathermen of Recovery (LORE) hosted six meetings. And, as always, the vendor mart did not disappoint.

The cornerstone of GLLA 2017 Weekend was the two contest nights…and, this year, GLLA hosted eight contests. After all the interviews, speeches, fantasies, and pop questions, the Great Lakes regional winners are as follows: Great Lakes Leather SIR 2018: Sir Jay, Great Lakes Leatherboy 2018 boy Steve, Great Lakes Ms Leather Pride 2017 Daddy Sky Cotton, Great Lakes Bootblack 2017 Ray, Great Lakes Master and slave 2017 Master Scott and slave lyon, Great Lakes Power Exchange 2018 Mistress Elliot, Anders and Hagen of Missouri, Great Lakes Trainer 2018 Sir Nate and Great Lakes Puppy 2018 Pup Tey.
