Not long after the beginning of Somandros, Avatar Club Los Angeles was founded in 1982.

Story by Alexei Romanoff needed. www.avatarla.org

Founded in early 1982, Los Angeles' first men's SM club was named Somandros with a focus on education, safe sex and play. The term Old Guard Leather was the title of one of the monthly meetings and is The Leather Journal's first account of that phrase.

David Kloss became the first International Mr. Leather in Chicago, IL. Durk Dehner, later of Tom of Finland Foundation fame, was first runner-up and Jesse Capello was second runner-up 12 men competed at the Gold Coast. For those trivia buffs, Kloss was Mr. Brig from San Francisco, CA. And more trivia: the first year it was Mr. International Leather according to the banner that hung over the back of the stage. Was that a mistake? If not, when was it changed to International Mr. Leather. www.imrl.com

Drummer Magazine Number 1Circa late 1975 the first Issue of Drummer Magazine debuted. For the first time, anyone had access to Leather by their own choice. This was the beginning of what The Leather Journal has often dubbed The Drummer Boom. Generally speaking, before that there was Old Guard Leather and later their was New Guard.

The first publisher and editor of Drummer was Jeanne Barney who started Drummer in Los Angeles, CA. Drummer later moved to San Francisco under new ownership. Drummer #1 had a feature titled The ABC's of S&M. Perusing the pages, one can see the longer hair styles of the mid-1970s - pre Village People. The phrase "Leather community" appeared in Drummer #1, so we know the term goes back at least to 1975. Drummer published 214 editions before folding circa 2001, becoming the longest running Leather/BDSM/Fetish publication for several years.

The quote from Henry David Thoreau, "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away." was Drummer's motto from day one.
